Integration & Collaborative Working – Albany Court, Hartlepool

Following a great night at the prestigious ‘Constructing Excellence in the North East (CENE) Awards 2010’ we are extremely proud to announce that Gus Robinson Developments Limited (GRD), in partnership with Housing Hartlepool won the ‘Integration & Collaborative Working’ award for the refurbishment scheme at Albany Court.

Whilst the terrific working relationship between ourselves and Housing Hartlepool was acknowledged, great accord was given to the fact that the elderly tenants also remained in residence at all times whilst the £3.2m phased renovation works were carried out. This recognised that the end-users were also integral in helping achieve this award. This had also previously been noted by John Healey, the Housing Minister, who had visited the complex whilst works were ongoing.

The refurbishment of the complex now incorporates underfloor and air source heating, solar panels and rainwater harvesting which together with upgrades and alterations has vastly improved living conditions for this close-knit group of residents, as well as significantly reducing the environmental footprint of the building.

Sylvia Thubron (Housing Hartlepool) and Bill Warren (Gus Robinson Developments Limited) Accepting the award.

The award is a true testimony to our commitment to partnering and the quality service that we provide our clients.

As stated on the night “Judges looked for evidence of how workforce development has improved as a result of collaboration, long-term relationships and common processes and tools across organisations. Successful entries have shown the judges integration within their teams to such a level that they appear as a single entity to the customer, and evidence of how workforce development has improved as a result of collaboration.” – Twenty Ten Awards Programme

There was fierce competition within the Integration & Collaborative Working category, comprising a total of 10 nominated projects throughout the North East. As winners of this prestigious award the team will now progress to the national finals that are due to take place in the Autumn of 2010.

We are currently working on a similar scheme at Richard Court in Hartlepool for Housing Hartlepool, utilising the same collaborative approach to ensure that this sheltered housing complex is also an unrivalled success.

Hartlepool – Tall Ships 2010

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Gus Robinson Developments Limited would like to congratulate everyone involved in bringing the Tall Ships 2010 event to Hartlepool. The 4-day event was a massive success, with Hartlepool Mail reporting close to one million visitors to the Town, generating an estimated £16m in revenue.

With an event of this magnitude there were bound to be some niggles, but these were minimal. In fact there was adequate parking, all walking routes were clearly marked and Hartlepool was more than able to accommodate the number of visitors. All of the traffic through the town was kept to a steady flow and diversions were kept to a minimum, which ensured the town didn’t come to a standstill as some pessimists were predicting pre-event. Taking all the aforementioned ‘plus points’ into account it is evident that the event organisers have done themselves and the Town proud, hopefully this will be taken into consideration when Hartlepool apply to hold the event again.

Aside from the Tall Ships, many visitors also came to see a host of bands that were playing throughout the event. Many local bands were playing and some big names also made an appearance, with the likes of Ocean Colour Scene, Echo and the Bunnymen and The Doves to name a few. There was also a World Market, numerous parades and many theatrical performances during the course of the event, ensuring that there was continual entertainment taking place – and catering for a wide variety of tastes.

Gus Robinson Developments Limited hope Hartlepool are successful in bringing the Tall Ships back to the Town, or at least are able to organise an annual event of similar sorts, as obviously this can only be good for the Town’s reputation and it’s people.

GRD – Academic Roundup 2010

Friday, August 13th, 2010

It has been another successful academic year for Gus Robinson Developments Limited (GRD), a year that sees five employees completing their apprenticeship and a further three employees successfully attaining degrees.

Our three newest time-served Electricians are Michael Hadfield, Mark Raine, Chris Thomas and Sean Eddy and Kris Marley are this year’s Plumbing representatives. All five lads are ‘Hartlepool Born and Breed’ and all studied at Hartlepool College of Further Education as part of our ongoing partnership with the college.

On the degree front Matthew Jowsey and Matthew Palmer both completed their BSC Honours in Quantity Surveying, which they studied at Northumbria University and Luke Hopkins attained his degree in Business Management, which he studied at Durham University. The two Matthew’s are currently enjoying a well earned break from their studies and are all looking forward to attending their Graduation Day. There is no rest for Luke, who is already embarking on the next step of the ladder and is currently working towards his professional CIMA qualification.

It has been an outstanding year for Kris Marley, who enjoyed further success when he was named as the Plumbing Apprentice of the Year by Hartlepool College of Further Education. The top ten award winners were entered into a national competition where they competed for the National Plumbing Apprentice of the Year Award. Kris did himself, and the company, proud with a very respectable 3rd place, this makes him eligible for the World Finals to be held next year. Kris’s hard work has not gone unnoticed with Kris being awarded the Gus Robinson Developments Limited – “Employee of the Month” award for July, well done Kris, don’t spend your winnings all in one go!

GRD have been Investors in People accredited since 1991, an accolade that is fitting to our training culture and the belief we have in our employees, whom we deem to be our greatest asset. As one batch of students qualify and progress through the company, GRD turns its attention to the next intake of trainees and apprentices; this is a system that has served the company and the local community proud for over 3 decades.

Gus Robinson Developments Limited Sponsor Kenya Project

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Gus Robinson Developments Limited (GRD) is sponsoring a team of 8 students for a voluntary Kenyan project.  The aim of the project is to construct a two classroom extension to the Ngecho Primary School, which is situated in the Gilgil region of Kenya.

The team of volunteers comprise of:

Louisa Samuels Medical Student
Daniel Henderson Medical Student
Annabel Scott Psychology Student
Jessica Witty English Language Student
Edward Pinder Medical Student
Craig Marshall Medical Student
Omar Aljuhani Chemical Engineering Student
Rachel Baxter Geography Graduate

The team have their work cut out with responsibilities including organizing their accommodations, liaising with the Project Manager, sourcing, purchasing and arranging delivery of all materials, hiring additional labour whilst trying to meet the six week project deadline.  Also, adding to their workload, the students have the opportunity to teach the pupils in Maths, English, Art and Sports during their stay.

Mrs Methenge (Ngecho’s Head Teacher) and Mr Methenge (Project Manager/Structural Engineer) are said to be very pleased the team are carrying out the project at their school and are looking forward to their arrival.

The team’s first task was to arrange their accommodation with the Mburu family who own the Spring House that the team will be renting, which will be used as a project HQ for the duration of their stay in Kenya.  No doubt Mrs Mburu (or Mama as she affectionately likes to be called) will be pampering them during their stay and maybe treating them to some of the local bakery products that is ran by Mr Mburu.

The next step for the team was to recruit some local labour.  Their first target, was Njima Kagenyo  a Foreman who has previously worked for Mr Methenge. Njima has two children that attend Ngecho Primary School and another bundle of joy that will no doubt be a pupil in the future.  We are informed that Njima is a great teacher and will pass his construction knowledge onto the team of students while they are under his wing, we are also informed that Njima has a ‘cheeky’ sense of humour, which must come with working within the construction industry.

The next recruit was a lady called Damaris who, like Njima, is kind and friendly but also a very good cook, we are told, which should keep the troop happy during their working stay in Kenya.

With the accommodation and labour sorted, the team are now looking forward to getting down to business.  They will be visiting the local builders merchants to negotiate prices and arrange delivery for all of the required materials.  The team know that if they have any problems they can utilise GRD’s company buyer who always ensures best value, no matter where the project is situated.

The team are going to endeavour to keep GRD informed of their progress when they can make time to trek to Nairobi, which is the closest place with internet facility – So keep an eye out for further updates…

We wish he team and the villagers all the luck in the world, they will have to put in the hours in order to meet the six week deadline, but GRD are sure they will be successful and enjoy every minute of their stay.

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Gus Robinson Developments Limited (GRD) are delighted to announce that we have been successfully appointed as one of the two main contractors within the Hartlepool Local Education Authority (LEA) framework for 2010 – 2012, Planned Maintenance & Minor Building Works.

There was fierce competition for this highly sought partnering contract, which had an initial shortlist of 27 contractors.  The contract covers all aspects of school maintenance, new build projects, extensions to existing buildings, alterations and refurbishments.  By utilising our in house building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical departments we are able to offer a streamlined service which can drastically reduce decision making time to the benefit of the projects.

GRD enjoy working within the education sector, thriving on the challenges and tight deadlines that are frequently associated with these contracts.  We gain great satisfaction from consistently delivering a high quality end product within tight time constraints that meet the needs of the School, the Pupils and the local Community.

When this contract is complete GRD will have worked in partnership with Hartlepool LEA for nine consecutive years.  This is testament to our ongoing commitment to partnering and the sensitivity that we continually demonstrate when working within the educational environment.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Hartlepool LEA for continuing the partnership with GRD and we look forward to working alongside such a prestigious client for many years to come.
